Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti national park in Tanzania occupies 14,763 square km. The park boasts the highest wildlife concentration on the continent of Africa and one of the best places to see the ¡°big five¡± - elephant, rhino, lion, leopard and buffalo. The annual animal immigration led by the thousands of wildebeests starts in May and lasts until June. Gazelle, zebra, giraffe, buffalo and eland in search of water share the movement. Along side this migration are predators and scavengers such as lions, hyena and vultures. Other common species found here include hippo, giraffe, eland, impala, baboons, monkeys and a profusion of almost 500 bird species.

Other animals which can be found in the park are elephant, baboon, giraffe, hippo, leopard, hyena and a wide range of antelope species. NGOROGORO CRATER

The crater is popularly known as the eighth wonder of the world. It covers an area of 259 square km (100sq. miles). With 610 meters high walls, making it the largest intact crater in the world. It is home to up to 25,000 larger mammals, almost half of them zebra and wildebeest. There are also buffalo, gazelle, eland and wart hog. Such vast numbers attract predators a plenty, mainly lions, leopards, cheetah and hyena. A teeming bird life can also be found. More than 100 species of birds not found in Serengeti have been spotted here. Where as the temperature on the rim of the crater is usually chilly and the atmosphere foggy, half way down the crater it brightens and becomes savanna warm temperature at the bottom of the crater.

Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park covers an area of 390 sq. km, It is a ground water reservoir which is partially fed by small rivers flowing down the escarpment. There are hot water springs, which were formed at the time of faulting of the rift valley. The lake attracts huge flocks of birds. There are thousands of flamingo whose pink coloring is reflected beautifully by the waters of the lake. Other species of bird found here include pelican, storks, sacred ibis and Egyptian geese. It is here that one encounters the tree-climbing lions, which spend hours on the branches of the acacia tree, three to seven meters above the ground.

Tarangire National Park

The park covers approximately 2,600 sq. km. It is most spectacular during the dry season in months of January through March and July through October when the animals migrate from waterless southern Masailand to the last floods of the Tarangire river looking for water. The park is also famous for the presence of the greater Kudu animals. Like most of the national parks in the northern circuit, a wide variety of wildlife may be seen ranging from the black rhino to the gerenuk and impalas.

Olduvai Gorge

Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania¡¯s Serengeti National Park is one of the most successful archeological sites, yielding numerous remains and artifacts of early humans. This is where Doctors Mary and Louis Leakey discovered East Africa¡¯s earliest known humanoid remains in 1959. Since then there have been many significant discoveries at the site and an interesting little museum has been created to display some of the findings.
