CHOBE NATIONAL PARK

Chobe National Park is the second largest National Park in Botswana. It covers 10,566 square km and has one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife. One of the parkĄ¯s major features is its large elephant population, which is estimated to be 40,000 strong. Highest concentrations of the elephants can be found in the Northern region of Botswana. The park also boasts impressive populations of giraffe, cheetah, elephant, zebra, buffalo, lion, bat-eared fox, spotted hyenas and more.

The parkĄ¯s landscape is awe inspiring. Among its greatest attractions is Serondela Reserve situated in the extreme Northeast of the park. The Reserve features lush plains and dense teak. It also showcases one of the best concentrations Savuti Marsh for wildlife viewing. Along the river, the animals meet at The Linzanti Swamp. Pelicans are among the vast variety of birdlife in the park.

MAKADIKGADI PANS NATIONAL PARK

The Makgadikgadi Pans National Park is located in Northern Botswana. The Makgadikgadi Pans are the residue of a great lake that once covered much of northern Botswana, fed by rivers carrying salts leached from the lake's catchment area. Because the basin had no outlet, the salts were concentrated in low lying areas. Less than 10,000 years ago, climactic changes caused the lake to evaporate, leaving only salt deposits.

Today, Makgadikgadi is not always dry. The pans, which are situated in the south, east and northeastern areas of the park, fill with water during the rains from mid-November and mostly retain their water into April or May. The "thirstlands" are then transformed into great sheets of water, which attract a spectacular array of waterbirds and trigger dramatic migrations of wildebeest and zebra. It is unfortunate that this huge water spectacle becomes practically inaccessible by road at this time, but anyone fortunate enough to fly over the area during the wet season sees a water wonderland of incredible scenic beauty.

NXAI PANS NATIONAL PARK

Nxai Pan National park is set on the northern fringe of the Makgadikgadi basin and includes Nxai Pan, an ancient lakebed. Nxai Pan National Park consists mainly of a series of fossil pans, all of which are covered in short nutritious grasses. The area is the breeding ground for large herds of zebra, wildebeest, gemsbok, and eland. Unusual game species that can be seen here are the hartebeest, bat-eared fox, brown hyena, and cheetah.

The focal point of Nxai Pan is the water hole. While many parks are not considered to be at their best during the rains, Nxai Pan becomes a veritable Garden of Eden during the rainy season. The pans provide excellent grazing, particularly for the springbok, which is almost always abundant in this area. The game viewing can be rather unpredictable in Nxai Pan during the dry season. However, once the rains have started, gemsbok, elephant and zebra migrate to the area. Zebra flock to the pans in thousands to breed. This combined with the multitude of young springbok being reared in the Pans, lends itself to spectacular game-viewing.
